KAVC men break a long spell in the 15th edition MEM

KAVC men put their foot to the point when they lifted the 15th edition of the KAVC NSSF Founders’ International Memorial Volleyball tournament after seeing off local rivals SPORT S at the final in straight sets (3-0) 29-27, 25, 21, 25-16 in just an hour.

KAVC men had last won this coveted trophy in the year 2000.
In the women’s category KCC defended their title also in straight sets (3-0) 25-22, 25-16, 25-21 equating to a similar lot as hosts KAVC in the last 12 editions with 5 cups apiece, the other two having been picked by Kenya’s NCBD and NCC.

Earlier in two very exciting Semi-finals, defending men’s champion from Burundi Muzingha were eliminated by SPORT S (3-2) 20-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-15, 15-10 while KAVC stopped another Burundi side Rukinzo also in a tie-break (3-2) 25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 23-25, 15-13. The women in an all Ugandan Semi-final had KCC beat Cobap 3-0 and KAVC beat SPORT S 3-0

The NSSF and Coca-Cola sponsored International also showcased top level sit volleyball for persons with disabilities as well as primary school volleyball.

The finals and awards ceremony were presided over by the State Minister for Higher Education Hon. John Chrysostom Muyingo as guest of honor alongside the deputy managing director of NSSF Ms. Geraldine Ssali and many other dignitaries.

The champions each received cash awards of 850,000 while the runner up made off with 500,000 Uganda Shillings.

KAVC International in high gear already

The 15th edition of the KAVC International is already raging with defending champions Muzingha from Burundi alongside their country compatriots arriving by yesterday ahead of the games this weekend. The two men's teams are already scrimmaging at the main venue MUBS to acclimatize and Muzingha is more than ready to defend the cherished title. More foreign teams are expected this afternoon.

Technical Meeting is scheduled for 7:00 pm this evening at Lugogo Club Oasis at which the tournament draws and fixture shall be undertaken among other accreditation requirements. Any participating team in line with the FIVB regulations is allowed only two foreign players on their team. The two Burundi teams a few years ago enrolled some top Ugandan players in a semi-professional stint.

The games are slated to start at 8:30 am at MUBS Nakawa and Namboole.


NSSF bankrolls MEM2011

For the fourth year running NSSF maintained their relationship with Uganda’s biggest International Volleyball Event that has often attracted over 5 countries from the region to showcase among the best talent in sub-saharan Africa.

The sponsorship package of twenty one million shillings was unveiled at a press conference this Afternoon held at Workers House by the Deputy Managing Director Ms. Geraldine Ssali flanked by her top NSSF team of the chief finance officer Mr. Patrick Ayota, Head Marketing and Communications Mr. Charles Muhoozi, Brand Marketing Manager Ms. Olive Lumonya, Public Relations Manager Mr. Victor Karamagi, Public Relations Officer Lillian Chipaye. The President, KAVC Ms. Florence Nannyondo received the package on behalf of Kampala Amateur Volleyball Club.

NSSF will be joined by Coca Cola who are providing the refreshements.

KAVC MEM2011, Confirmations continue

As the countdown to the 15th edition of the KAVC Founders’ Memorial International volleyball tournament ticks off, confirmations for both local and foreign teams continue to come in. Local top guns who will represent the country include men and women from SPORT S, KCC, COBAP, CUBS and hosts KAVC. Others are OKVC (Old Kampala Volleyball Club) men and Kumi Volleyball Club men from the East.

Rwanda has confirmed APR men and women as well as Ruhango women, while Burundi has confirmed defending champions Muzingha VC men and Rukinzo VC men.

Expected from Kenya are Administration Police men, Nairobi City Council men & women, Eldoret Prisons.

From Tanzania confirmation are expected from Mzinga Corporation Morogoro men & women, TPDF men & women and Tanzania Prisons men.

Meanwhile this Sunday having secured a day-off the National League from UVF for Ugandan teams to finalize their preparations, the organizers will be running a test event competition to test all the aspects of the venue and competition handling where some of the participating local teams shall face-off in three big matches according the schedule below:

Kampala Amateur Volleyball Club this year will be celebrating 41 years of continued promotion of sports in Uganda. The President, Ms. Mary Florence Nannyondo shall preside over the Sunday test event under the coordination of the Local MEM Organizing Committee (MEMOC) chairman Leslie Mugisa.

Coca Cola has once again taken up the 15th Edition Provider of refreshments for the KAVC International Founders’ Memorial Tournament slated for the weekend of 13th and 14th of August 2011 at MUBS Nakawa.

Coke echoed that they were grateful to associate with one of the most organized sports entity in the Country as well as one of the most exciting tournaments that has often showcased the region’s top talent.

Just about a fortnight away, Kampala will be witnessing big games when the 15th edition of the KAVC Founders’ Memorial Volleyball tournament unfolds on the weekend of the 13th and 14th August 2011.

Acclaimed to be among the oldest sporting outfit in the country, KAVC will be celebrating 41 years of existence from way back in 1970 when a few energetic and youthful Makerere University graduates vowed to extend their volleyball talent to greater heights.

Teams have been invited from the region to vie against the Nation’s top sides including the men’s defending champions Muzinga Volleyball Club from Burundi as well as counterparts Rukinzo from Bujumubura.

From Kenya, Nairobi City Council, Homegrown, Administration Police and Prisons Kenya were extended invites while Rwanda are expecting to send Ruhango Volleyball Club, Rwanda Revenue Authority and Rwanda Patriotic Army(APR).

From Tanzania TPDF, TZ Prisons and Mzinga are too expected to debut in the region derby.

The annual event shall be hosted at MUBS Nakawa as the main venue alongside KIU, Namboole and Makerere University. On the local side the women’s defending champion KCC as well as SPORT S men and women, KCC men, COBAP men and women are among the local gurus that are expected to set the fire hotter.

Plans to have participation of a combined team from Uganda’s volleyball powerhouse Kumi district are in the offing to further raise this region’s international competences. KAVC is currently in focused training and plans to field 2 women’s teams and 3 men’s teams in this year’s edition.

Hard fighting men’s team fall to UCU at Mak open.

A youthful KAVC (men) side fell 2:1 to University side UCU doves in the 38th edition of the Makerere university Open Volleyball Championship last weekend.

The 2010 league champions who had earlier seen off National Champions Sports S in a similar score line mesmerized the crowd with spectacular net and back defense in a match dubbed “final before the final”. Joel Endra making his debut after re-signing from UCU Doves stepped in Piere kamugasha’s (Retired) shoes with also with the famous shirt 6 won by the man who watched the games from the touchline. Allan Abak also from UCU bolstered the back court defense alongside Captain Alex.

Eric Ogwang and Mathew Mwenyi combined well with setter Mathew Amolo in the centre. 2010 League MVP Hanington nsubuga was missing in action as he prepares for a CAVB beach volleyball Referees Course in Namibia this week. The Ladies team who missed the last two open tournaments is gearing up for KIU open on 26th – 27th march 2011. The team has used the last two months to prepare for the National League launch against NUVC on.

The absence of Nkumba University was a blessing for UCU Ladies team as the swept a double in both Club and institution categories. Host Makerere could not match up to a rejuvenated Ndejje university in the men’s institutions games.

Tito Toma (Coach) will now turn his attention to the ceremonial League launch against Sport S this Sunday at KIU. Having won the national League last year and setting a new record of Unbeaten run in regular Volleyball season; KAVC will have to fight tooth and nail to repeat the streak this year.

KAVC Women’s team storms Stella Marris College Nsuube.

The KAVC women’s team led by Women’s’ team manager Miss Josephine Namanda celebrated the international women’s day in style. The National Champions took a road trip to Stella Marris College Nsuube to not only celebrate women’s day; but also pay homage to the once powerful Volleyball senior secondary school. The Lugogo based team played a friendly match with Stemacon VC; the schools volleyball team.

It’s important to note that, Namanda, Viviane Aketch, Prossy Alobo, Sharon Pajije, and Maggie Nambasa are a crop of talent which emerged from the Nkokonjeru hill in the early 2000’s. They have gone on to be a force to reckon with in both beach and regular volleyball scene in Uganda.

Over 400 girls’ gripped the scorching suns as the school celebrated an international womens day with inter house athletics competition. Chief Guest, Josephine Namanda who was accompanied by other Old girls and OGs/OBs of the old girls reiterate the benefits of Sports in career development to the young girls. Scholarships, jobs, foreign trips and cash process are the sports gospel Josephine preached to the attentive girls. “I owe my success to Volleyball and hard work and believe all the career ladies here as well, so all of you must take sports seriously”. Said Namanda.

She advised the school administration to offer full support to the girls in developing skills in sports. The chief guest was however mystified when Mathias (her former House) settle outside the podium finish. Francis (122 points), Bernard (86 points), Kevin (73 points), Mathias (64 points) . Sammy Laloyo was voted best dancer by the girls after a vibrating display of dance strokes when the visitors penned down their signature dance style (KAVC-ZOLO)

The team as part of social cooperate responsibilities offered first aid assistance to the athletes throughout the competition. After being treated to a mouth watering meal at the school cafeteria, the girls hit the 9-18 meter court for action. The court where not however marked and so the first set was played on open court. Mr. Kasadha Yekosofaht, the sports teacher then marked the courts for the second set. The one hour encounter ended 3:0 (25:15, 25:12, 25:16) in favor of the visitors.
The KAVC crew travelled in three groups led by, Josephine Namanda, speed merchant Sammy Laloyo and men’s team manager Mr. Robinson Tumwesigye. The second and third group however adventured to a landing site before heading to Nkokonjeru.

Roofings Ltd boosts KAVC

9th March 2011.
KAVC received One million shillings worth of training equipment from Roofings Ltd. The president of KAVC, Ms Mary Florence Nannyondo, on Saturday 5th March 2011 led a delegation of KAVC members to the official hand-over ceremony which took place at Roofings Ltd, Lubowa. She said KAVC was very proud to associate with Roofings Ltd, and she looked forward to a longer partnership with the company.

Flanked by the Vice President, Mr. Ainebyona Amon, Public Relations Director Ms. Laloyo Sammy, Ladies’ Manager Ms. Josephine Nammanda, Men’s Manager Mr. Robinson Tumwesigye, Ladies’ Player Representative Ms. Cissy Musiime and other players, she expressed her gratitude to Roofings Ltd, adding that the new equipment was a big boost to the club during this training season.

Mr. Stuart Mwesigwa, the Marketing manager of Roofings Ltd took the delegation around the factory, before officially handing over the balls. Other items handed over to the team included calendars and t-shirts. The team was later hosted to a sumptuous luncheon.

On Sunday 6th Feb 2011, the out-going President, Mr. Bob Ewange hosted the KAVC family to a fun-filled hand- over ceremony at his residence. There was a lot of merry- making as the out-going Executive handed over power to the current management team.
The team comprises Mr. Amon Ainebyona (Vice President), Mr. Mofaht Masaba (Executive Secretary), Mr. Titus Toma (Technical Director), Mr. Leslie Mugisa (Player Rep. Men), Ms. Cissy Musiime (Player Rep. Women), Mr. Robinson Tumwesigye (Manager Men), Ms. Josephine Nammanda (Manager Women), Ms. Joyce Achan (Finance Director), Ms. Rahma Masagazi (Director Sponsorship and Marketing), Mrs. Alice Gita Okecho (Director Social Welfare) and Ms. Sammy Laloyo (Public Relations Director). This team is expected to lead KAVC for the next two years 2011-2012, under the leadership of the first- ever female President of KAVC, Ms. Mary Florence Nannyondo.
